Winkin scores twice despite overtime heartbreaker vs. Dartmouth

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite freshman Bethany Winkin's (Winslow, Maine) first-career goals, the Bryant University field hockey team fell to Dartmouth, 3-2, in overtime Sunday afternoon in Hanover, N.H.

The Bulldogs (2-7) held a 2-1 lead into the final two minutes of regulation but a score from Dartmouth's (2-5) Julia Donald at the 68:29 marked forced overtime where the Big Green found the back of the cage at the 75:50 mark.

It was Dartmouth that struck first at the 22:01 mark when Ali Savage and Janine Leger converted a 2-on-1 one for Savage's first marker of the contest. However, the Bulldogs responded, scoring the next two goals, first at the 32 minute mark when WInkin put home her first-career tally after a barrage of rebounds in front of the goal.

Winkin gave her team its first lead of the contest just under 10 minutes into the second frame when the freshman corralled a rebound, turned, and finished her second of the contest at the 44:28 mark.

The Bulldogs held their narrow edge into the final ticks of the contest until Donald forced overtime with just over 90 seconds left, setting up Dartmouth for the eventual sudden-death victory in the extra period.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) made seven saves in her ninth start of the season, while freshman Camryn Bernheimer (Lewes, Del.) made her first-career defensive save.

Bryant returns to action on Thursday when they visit Holy Cross for an evening tilt in Worcester, Mass.
