FH heads to NJ for big weekend vs. Rider, Monmouth

Smithfield, R.I. – With just two games remaining on the 2014 regular season schedule, the Bryant University field hockey team will head to New Jersey over the weekend to wrap up MAAC play with battles at Rider (Friday-4pm) and at Monmouth (Sunday-1pm).

After climbing back to .500 against MAAC play with a 2-1 win over Siena on Friday, Oct. 17, the Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 shootout loss to Quinnipiac on Oct. 19 to fall to 1-2 against league opponents. However hope is still very much alive for Bryant with just two games left until the MAAC Tournament which commences on Friday, Nov. 7.

First up for the Black and Gold is Rider who enters Friday's ever-important showdown with a 9-7 overall record, 2-1 in the MAAC. After starting off 2-0 in the league, the Broncs dropped a 2-1 decision to league-leading Sacred Heart, Sunday in Fairfield, Conn. Freshman Allison Baligian and senior Dezarae Fillmyer currently lead the way with 14 points apiece while junior Joelle Prettyman has posted a 1.71 goals-against average in 14 starts. Historically, Rider holds a 5-1 series lead over Bryant, with the Bulldogs' lone victory coming last season in a 2-1 shootout victory in Smithfield.

On Sunday, the Black and Gold will head to West Long Branch, N.J., to visit old foe Monmouth in both team's regular season finale. The Hawks enter weekend action with a 9-7 overall record, 2-1 in the MAAC coming off back-to-back wins over Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac. Led by graduate student Trish O'Dwyer (12g, 9a) and senior Amanda Schoenfeld (9g, 5a), the duo has combined for 56 points (21g, 13a) and currently rank first and second in the MAAC in scoring. The Hawks also lead the league in goals per game, points per game, corners per game, and shots per game. Entering Sunday, Monmouth holds a 4-1 all-time series lead over Bryant, winning the last four matchups, including a 4-0 beatdown last season in Smithfield.
