Kiss, Pride combine for 71 as Bryant wins ninth straight

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Peter Kiss and Charles Pride combined for 71 points and became the first teammates since 2013 to each score 30 as the Bryant University men's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 99-86 victory over Sacred Heart on Thursday night.

With the win, the Bulldogs are now 15-8 overall and 12-1 in the Northeast Conference. Bryant's nine-game winning streak is the longest in Division I program history.

The nation's highest-scoring duo put on quite the show Thursday, with Kiss scoring a career-high 37 and Pride producing his third-straight 30-point effort with 34. Kiss and Pride finished a combined 21-of-23 from the free throw line. Adham Eleeda was Bryant's third player in double-figures, finishing with 13. Pride (9), Kiss (6), Eleeda (5) and Greg Calixte (5) all finished with 5+ rebounds.

How it Happened

  • The teams traded basets for the first 14 minutes of the half until the Bulldogs closed the opening 20 minutes with a 23-11 run. The run was highlighted by 10-of-12 shooting from the stripe.
  • Thursday opened with Tyler Thomas and Peter Kiss trading three-point baskets.
  • Eleeda followed with his first triple of the night to give the Black and Gold their first lead.
  • Joey Reilly would hit a three from the wing to tie the game at 16-16 with 12:04 to go.
  • Kiss then got going, driving to the hoop for two and then throwing down an emphatic two-handed slam off an SHU turnover.
  • SHU rallied, scoring the next five points to take a brief 21-20 lead with 9:30 to go.
  • A Nico Galette layup with 6:21 left would tie the game at 27-27 but the Bulldogs would answer with a 23-11 run to close the half.
  • Luis Hurtado Jr. started the run with a coast-to-coast bucket, while Kiss and Eleeda each canned two free throws.
  • Leading 37-34 with three minutes to go, Pride scored eight-straight points to give Bryant an 11-point lead. He converted a three-point play, turned a steal at halfcourt into two and then fought off contact to make a driving layup and convert another three-point play.
  • Bryant would finish the first half 25-11 rebounding advantage, a 14-0 edge in fast break points and a 24-12 edge on points in the paint.    
  • Kiss helped Bryant build to its lead, scoring eight points in an 11-3 run to make it 61-43 with 16:00 to play.
  • Kiss then reached 30 points with a pull-up three from the far corner, making it 78-57 with 11:26 to go.
  • Pride joined him at 30 with a three from the left wing at the 6:11 mark.
  • Kiss then put an exclamation point on the evening with a 360 dunk in transition.  

Stats

  • Bryant finished 32-of-63 (50.8 percent) from the field, 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) and 28-of-34 (82.4 percent) from the line.
  • Bryant outrebounded Sacred Heart, 38-30. The Bulldogs also outscored Sacred Heart 27-0 in fast break points.
  • Kiss led all scorers with 37 points on 12-of-24 shooting from the field and 11-of-12 shooting from the line. He added six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Pride added 34 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field and a 10-of-11 mark from the line. He finished a rebound shy of his third-straight double-double. Pride also added two assists and three steals.
  • Eleeda finished with 13 points and five rebounds. He was 3-of-8 from three and made four free throws.
  • Hurtado Jr. had five points, five assists, three rebounds and didn't turn the ball over in 27 minutes.
  • Tyler Brelsford finished with six points and three rebounds.     

Game Notes

  • Bryant swept the season series from Sacred Heart and has now won three-straight against the Pioneers. It is the first time since 2013-14 that the Bulldogs have won three-straight against the Pioneers.
  • It marks the first season sweep of the Pioneers since the 2014 seaosn.
  • The Bulldogs have now won a DI program record nine-straight games. It is the longest winning streak since the 2004-05 team won 11 consecutive games.
  • Bryant has also clinched a top-two seed in the NEC Tournament.
  • Kiss and Pride become the first Bryant teammates to each score 30+ points since Dyami Starks and Alex Francis did so on Dec. 21, 2013 against Delaware.
  • The duo now leads the nation, averaging a combined 41.8 points per game.
  • Kiss' 37 points are a career-high and mark his fifth 30-point effort of the season. The 37 points are the third-most in a single game in DI program history.
  • Kiss posted his 37th double-figure scoring game in 40 outings as a Bulldog.
  • Kiss has scored 20+ points 11 times this year and has 20+ points in eight of his 10 NEC games. He has scored 20+ points in 15 of his 24 NEC regular-season games.

  • Kiss now leads the nation in scoring with 23.6 points per game. Kiss is averaging 26.9 ppg in NEC play.
  • Pride posted his third-straight 30-point effort and now has four in his career.

  • Pride now has 946 career points, needing just 54 to joining the 1,000-point club.
  • Pride also has 485 career rebounds, needing just 15 to become the third player in DI program history with 500 career boards.
