Bryant knocks off Manhattan in overtime, 104-97

BRONX – Earl Timberlake, Sherif Gross-Bullock and Antwan Walker combined for 63 points to help the Bryant University men's basketball team earn a 104-97 overtime victory over Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium.

Bryant improves to 8-3 on the season with the victory. It is the first overtime win for the Bulldogs since January 28, 2017.

The trio of Timberlake, Gross-Bullock and Walker, all from Washington, D.C., combined for 63 points, 24 rebounds and seven assists. Timberlake finished with a double-double of 23 points and 10 boards, Gross-Bullock had 20 points and six rebounds and Walker scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and overtime. Charles Pride (13) and Tyler Brelsford (11) also finished in double-figures for the Black and Gold.

Bryant trailed 85-83 with 30 seconds remaining but Timberlake was able to find a loose ball and lay it in with 13 seconds left to tie the game. Manhattan would miss a shot at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime. Walker went on to score seven points in the overtime session but Miles Latimer was able to convert a three-point play with 1:21 left in the extra session to put Bryant up four.

Key Moments

  • Timberlake was johnny on the spot with 13 seconds left, recovering a loose ball and putting it home to tie the game.
  • Latimer finished a key three-point play with 1:21 left in overtime to give Bryant a four-point advantage.

How it Happened

  • Threes from Gross-Bullock and Pride gave Bryant an early 8-4 lead.
  • Timberlake, who scored 14 points in the first half, finished a strong three-point play with 12:04 left in the half to give Bryant an 18-15 lead.
  • Doug Edert followed with his lone three of the afternoon and Josh Ozabor finished in transition to push the lead to eight, 23-15.
  • Bryant grabbed a 34-32 lead thanks to an exceptional play from Latimer. He recorded a chase-down block and then fed Timberlake underneath on the other end for the bucket.
  • Manhattan would eventually tie the game at 34-34 but Gross-Bullock followed with a three from in front of the Jasper bench.
  • Samir Stewart, who scored 35 points, hit a three to give the Jaspers a 41-39 lead with 1:49 left. The Jaspers would eventually end the half with a 45-41 lead.
  • Bryant spent a majority of the second half chasing the Jaspers, pulling within one on several occasions.
  • A three-point play from Walker brought Bryant within one and Brelsford canned two free throws to give the Bulldogs a 54-53 lead with 14:36 left.
  • The Jaspers would pull ahead by six before Brelsford finished in transition and splashed a three to make it 60-59 with 12:31 left.
  • Bryant and Manhattan then traded baskets but the Jaspers were able to take a five-point lead, 73-68, following a Stewart three with 7:25 left.
  • Three free throws from Timberlake brought Bryant back into the game and Gross-Bullock hit a transition three to give Bryant a 74-73 lead with 5:34 left.
  • Trailing 82-79, Manhattan tied the game on a three from Stewart with 1:33 left. After an offensive foul, Steward finished at the rim to give the Jaspers the lead.
  • Bryant and Manhattan then traded free throws before Timberlake was able to finish with 13 seconds left to tie the game.
  • Walker opened the overtime with a three from the top and then finished an emphatic one-handed slam on a lob from Gross-Bullock.
  • After the Jaspers took a brief lead, Gross-Bullock finished at the rim and Brelsford canned two free throws to make it 94-91.
  • Steward was then fouled shooting a three but made just one free throw. On the other end, Latimer was able to finish inside and then completed the three-point play to make it 97-93.
  • Bryant would then close it out for its eighth win.

  • Bryant finished the game 36-of-68 (52.9 percent) from the field, 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from three and 25-of-33 (75.8 percent) from the line.
  • The Bulldogs held a 48-36 advantage in rebounds.
  • Bryant had 18 assists and 58 points in the paint.
  • Timberlake finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He was 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-12 from the line.
  • Gross-Bullock posted 20 points, six rebounds and three assists. He was 8-of-15 from the field.
  • Walker finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. He was 9-of-14 from the field.
  • Pride had 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in 43 minutes.
  • Brelsford contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes.   

Game Notes

  • Bryant and Manhattan were meeting for the first time in program history.
  • Bryant hosted a pregame brunch to honor the late Fred Grasso, father of Bryant head coach Jared Grasso. The event drew over 150 friends, family and Bulldog supporters.
  • Bryant's eight non-conference wins match the DI program record set by the 2013-14 and 2019-20 teams.
  • Bryant had three 20-point scorers for the first time since Nov. 29, 2017 against Yale.
  • Pride finished in double-figures for the 64th time in his 94-game career.
  • Pride now has 1,286 points and 648 rebounds in his career.
  • Walker scored in double-figures for the ninth consecutive game and for the 10th time this season.
  • Walker's 20 points are a season high and his first 20-point game since scoring a career-high 26 on Feb. 6, 2021.
  • Walker is averaging 15.3 ppg and 7.6 rpg over his last nine.
  • Walker also played a career high 40 minutes.
  • Gross-Bullock has now scored in double figures in all 11 games this season. It marks his 33rd-career double-digit effort. SGB now has four 20-point games this season and seven in his career.
  • Timberlake's 23 points are a new career high. It is also his first-career 20-point outing. The 23 points came in just 26 minutes.
  • Timberlake finished with his third double-double of the season.
  • Brelsford finished in double figures for the second time in three games. He also set a career high with eight rebounds.
  • Brelsford is 9.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 4.0 apg over the last three games. He has 11 assists and three turnovers in his last two games.
