SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore forward Brett Larocque (Ottawa, Ont.) put home his team-leading sixth score of the season in the 54th minute to lift the Bryant University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday afternoon.
Just over 50 minutes into the match, freshman Curtis Orth (Ancaster, Ont.) beat an FDU defender up the sideline, making a beautiful move to find a streaking Larocque who controlled the ball and chipped it over Jacob Lissek for the lone goal of the contest.
Despite being outshot, 11-5, the Bulldogs hung on for a huge victory which put them into a tie for second place in the Northeast Conference standings. Sophomore keeper Chris Knaub (Yarmouth, Maine) made three saves in the contest, including a pair of impressive back-to-back stops in the second half, while Lissek stopped a pair of Bulldogs chances.
With just one match remaining in the regular season, the Bulldogs are in a strong position to earn a berth to the NEC Tournament for the first time in program history. A victory or a tie against Central Connecticut next Sunday would clinch a spot in the postseason for Bryant.
