Bulldogs sent into overtime after Golden Griffins' score with two minutes left in regulation

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's soccer team battled to a, 1-1, draw against Canisius Friday afternoon in Smithfield.

The Golden Griffins (1-3-1) controlled possession early in the match, applying pressure to the Bulldogs' (0-2-2) defensive half. The Black and Gold were able to respond to the attacks, led by goalkeeper Chris Knaub (Yarmouth, Maine). Knaub took command of the Bulldogs' 18-yard box, grabbing and clearing crosses from the Golden Griffs.

In the 27th minute, the senior captain came off his line to make a play on a 50-50 ball, preventing a Canisius scoring opportunity. Knaub came up with two big saves for the Bulldogs in the second half off a pair of Canisius' corner kicks.  The senior finished the game with five saves.

Off the bench, junior Curtis Orth (Ancaster, Ont.) scored the first goal of the match in the 27th minute. Receiving a chipped pass from David Abunaw (West Hartford, Conn.), Orth settled the ball at the top of the box and with his left foot, bent it around the keeper into the upper left corner.

The game seemed all but solidified for the Bulldogs until the 88th minute, when Golden Griffs' Chris Berardi sent the ball into the box off a corner kick. Alex De Carolis was there to finsish the ball with his head into the top left corner of the net.

The match headed into overtime, where momentum continued to swing back and forth between the two teams, resulting in a, 1-1, draw. Both teams finished the match with near even stats. The Bulldogs tallied 13 shots, placing five on goal, while the Golden Griffs finished with 12 attempts, putting six on frame.

The Bulldogs continue their quest for a win in their next match, when they host Buffalo on Sunday at 1 p.m.
