Twardowski's record highlights weekend

TWARDOWSKI SETS SCHOOL RECORD, BULLDOGS WIN 11 EVENTS AT MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Led by graduate student Scott Twardowski's (Rehoboth, Mass.) school record in the 3000m run at the Terrier Invitational and 11 first-place finishes at the MIT Coed Invitational, the Bryant University men's and women's track and field teams put together a solid showing over the weekend in the Boston area.

Just one of a handful of Bulldogs competing in the Terrier Invitational, Twardowski broke the school record in the 3000m run with a time of 8:30.16. The previous record had stood since 2002. The finish earned Twardowski a 35th-place finish. Bryant also received strong performances from Brooke Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) and Eimear Black (Glengormley, Ireland) at the Terrier Invitational. Tomasetti finished 34th in the 800m run with a time of 2:21.35 and Black finished 32nd in the mile with a time of 5:06.10.

On Saturday, the Black and Gold put together their finest meet of the season, capturing 11 first-place finishes at the MIT Coed Invitational. Chris Brida (Southampton, Mass.) led the way by winning both the long jump (6.26m) and the triple jump (13.77m). Amanda Dilley (Bridgewater, Mass.), Michael Arons (West Hartford, Conn.), Anthony Monteiro (Leominster, Mass.), Ryan Flanagan (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), Martha Reynolds (London, England), Blake Fenwick (Thomaston, Conn.) and David Hurley (Ashaway, R.I.) also won events for the Bulldogs. Dilley and Arons captured the 200m dash with times of 27.69 and 23.76, respectively. Monteiro won the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.90. Flanagan won the 800m run with a time of 2:07.31, while Reynolds (5:22.84) and Fenwick (4:42.93) captured the mile run. Hurley's victory came in the 5000m run, as he crossed the line with a time of 15:45.16. Bryant also added top finishes in both the men's and women's 4x800m relay events. Kara Walsh (Waltham, Mass.), Tomasetti, Black and Reynolds crossed the line with a time of 9:55.38, while Francis Foley (Acton, Mass.), Kenneth Rayner (Acton, Mass.), Fenwick and Ben Polichronopoulos (South Berwick, Maine) broke the tape with a time of 8:43.32.

Bryant also received several other strong finishes on Saturday. Arons and Kyle Reid (North Raynham, Mass.) tied for second in the 55m dash with times of 6.80 and Nicholas Douglas (Shelton, Conn.) and Kevin Louine (Mattapan, Mass.) finished within one hundredth of each other in the same event, earning fourth and sixth place, respectively. In addition to  Monteiro's victory in the 55m hurdles, Ronald Hill (New Bedford, Mass.) finished fifth (8.50). Kyia Jensen (Brunswick, Maine) earned a third-place finish in the women's 1000m run, while Foley and Rayner finished 4-5. Polichronopolous finished less than half a second behind Fenwick in the mile run, earning second place. Christopher Chapruet (Danvers, Mass.) and Jasmine Bryant (Salem, Mass.) earned third-place finishes in the 5000m run and the triple jump, respectively.

The Bulldogs return to the Ocean State next Saturday, Feb. 4 when they compete in the URI Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
