WALSH BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN THE 800 AT NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

RESULTS

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Kara Walsh's (Waltham, Mass.) school-record performance in the 800 highlighted a strong performance for the Bryant University track and field team on day one at the New England Championships.

After qualifying for the championships just last weekend, Walsh etched her name into the Bryant record books, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:17.96 and breaking the previous record 2:19.88 that Deirdre Doyle set in the 2009-10 season. Joining her classmate, Brooke Tomasetti (Waterford, Conn.) nearly broke Doyle's record as well, finishing with a time of 2:19.95. Walsh finished 17th while Tomasetti's time was good enough for 20th.

On the men's side, Anthony Monteiro (Leominster, Mass.), Kenneth Rayner (Acton, Mass.) and Francis Foley (Acton, Mass.) all put together strong performances for the Bulldogs. Competing in the 60m hurdles, Monteiro qualified for Saturday's semi-finals with a time of 8.50. Rayner and Foley both raced in the 1000 and both set personal bests. Running in the final indoor race of his career, Rayner finished 25th with a time of 2:36.31, while Foley finished 27th with a time of 2:38.16.

The New England Championships continue tomorrow at the Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University. Scott Twardowski (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Ryan Busby (Derry, N.H.) will run the 5k and 3k, respectively.
