Weiss earns top spot in the mile, several Bulldogs post career bests at URI Coaches Tribute

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Olivia Weiss (Newton N.J.) took home the top place in the mile as the Bryant University track & field team competed in the University of Rhode Island Coaches Tribute Meet on Friday, Feb. 9.

COACH SWITZER'S COMMENTS

"I am very pleased with the team's showing at URI this past weekend," Bryant head track & field coach Mitchell Switzer said. "This was the first time all season where I truly felt the team came together.  The energy and support led to some great competing across the board. I think the team is ready to carry that success and energy with them into next weekend. I am excited to see what they are going to be able to accomplish."

TOP PERFORMERS (MEN)

· Junior Evan Smith (Chester, Conn.) narrowly missed qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter dash. He finished ninth overall in the preliminaries with a time of 7.26 seconds.

· Junior Alec Binette (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Smith finished 8th and 9th overall in the 200-meter dash, respectively. Binette finished with a time of 23.37 seconds, while Smith had a time of 23.51.

· Sophomore Brian Murray (Westford, Mass.) earned a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter. He finished with a time of 51.34 seconds.

· Senior captain Ryan Poholek (North Attleboro, Mass.) set a new personal best in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.30, good for fourth all time in the Bryant record book. Poholek's previous best time was 1:57.80. Freshman Jordan Dagrin (Providence, R.I.) finished on Poholek's heels, finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:59.57.

· Junior Matt McGovern (Long Beach, N.Y.) was the top Bulldog finisher in the mile, finishing the event in 4:32.99.

· The quarter of Poholek, Dagrin, sophomore Christopher Wrenn (Norton, Mass.) and junior Brian Salit (Seekonk, Mass.) raced to a third place finish in the 4x400 relay. Bryant finished the event with a time of 3:36.26.

· Freshman Jacob Borgia (Westborough, Mass.) cleared a height of 3.98 meters in the pole vault, shattering his previous best mark of 3.81 meters. He ties Tyler Egner for seventh all-time at Bryant.

· Freshman Anthony Holloway (Forked River, N.J.), sophomore James Giumetti (Duxbury, Mass.), and Ryan Dumont all participated in the finals in the triple jump. Holloway finished as the top Bryant finisher, jumping a distance of 12.98 meters, a personal best.

· Freshman Brett Cloutier (North Attleboro, Mass.) set a new personal record in the shot put, throwing a distance of 13.05 meters. Cloutier moves from 10th to 8th in Bryant history.

TOP PERFORMERS (WOMEN)

· Weiss took home gold in the mile, finishing the event in 5:14.07.

· Junior Shirley Carrington (Dorchester, Mass.) and senior Shannon Gay (Woburn, Mass.) each qualified for the 60-meter finals. Carrington finished sixth with a time of 8.15 seconds, while Gay finished 8th with a time of 8.33 seconds. Gay posted a qualifying time of 8.29 seconds, a personal record, to advance to the finals.

· Sophomore Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) finished sixth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.14. Sullivan's time is good for fifth all-time at Bryant.

· Senior Melissa Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished second overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.13.

· Junior Alexandra Watts (Clinton, Conn.) cleared a height of 3.20 meters in the pole vault. She finished fourth overall.

· Freshman Camryn Wesoloskie (Manchester, Conn.) set a new personal best in the triple jump, finishing with a distance of 9.96 meters. Wesoloskie's previous best was 9.87 meters.

MEET NOTES

· This was the first meet Bryant competed in the state of Rhode Island since the Bulldogs opened the season at the Alden invitational, hosted by Brown University on Dec. 2.

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs will head to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island next weekend as the team will compete in the 2018 Northeast Conference Indoor Championships. The first day of competition is set for Friday with the championships concluding on Saturday.
