Bulldogs drop to the Crusaders, 1-0, in double overtime on Tuesday night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After 104 minutes of scoreless play, the Bryant University women's soccer team was defeated by Holy Cross, 1-0, in double overtime on Tuesday night in Worcester.

Nearly four minutes into the second overtime period, the Crusaders (3-4-2) were rewarded a free kick 25 yards outside of the Bulldogs' (1-8-0) net. The Bulldogs were unable to clear the ball from the 18-yard box and the Crusaders' forward Aly Spencer was there to clean up, finishing with her left foot into the right side of the net.

The Bulldogs nearly found the back of the goal a number of times in the second half, including a header from junior Kaitlyn Spangler (Acton, Mass.) that landed just wide of the right post.

The moment that nearly ended the match in Bryant's favor came with just over a minute left to play in regulation. The Bulldogs regained possession off of a Crusaders' free kick, after freshman Alex Ralph (Peterborough, Ont.) chased down the loose ball and cleared it ahead to junior Kianna Woods (Stafford Springs, Conn.). Woods was left one v. one with Crusaders' keeper Brooke Holle, who made a sliding save and knocked the ball away, refusing the Bulldogs of a game-winning goal.

Sophomore Haley Reddish (Natick, Mass.) led the Black and Gold with three shots, placing two on goal. Junior Melaina Aglieco (Rocky Hill, Conn.) also recorded two attempts on frame for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore keeper Rachel Brightman (New Rochester, N.Y.) tallied nine saves in the game, while Holle raked in five.

Holy Cross' attack was led by senior forward Annie Galvin, who contributed six attempts to the Crusades' 26-shot total.

The Bulldogs play next against Brown University on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in Providence.
