Benson and Conrad make key plays in Bulldogs' double overtime draw Friday afternoon

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – In what started as a slow match, the Bryant University women's soccer team, led by Scout Benson (Lynnfield, Mass.) in the attack and Kaylan Conrad (Avon, Conn.) in net, kept fans on their toes, as they finished in a 0-0 draw against Mount St. Mary's on Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (4-9-2, 3-1-1) saw a number of goal-scoring opportunities late in the match and carried the momentum into the two overtime periods. In the 95th minute, Benson connected on a cross from the right, shooting nearside from just outside the six-yard box, but Mounts' keeper Rachel Bourne made a great save on the play.

Well into the second overtime period, the Mountaineers received a corner kick, where Kristen Morawski was there to head it down, towards the net. Conrad was quick to react, diving to make a one-handed save on the ground.

The junior goalie came up with another critical save in the 102nd minute, after a rebound was fired back on target by Kirsten O'Malley from inside the six yard box. Conrad was there to rejecting the attempt, sliding feet first to prevent the Mount score.

In the second overtime period, Benson received another chance to seal a Bulldogs' victory, but was denied the breakaway, after Bourne sprinted off her line, sliding to take the ball away.

The senior forward gathered the ball for the final scoring opportunity in the last minute of play, but was unable to find the back of the net, after hitting the crossbar on the shot ripped from the top on the 18-yard box.

Benson led the game with 10 shots, placing five on frame, while collectively, the Bulldogs tallied eight of 21 attempts on goal. The Mountaineers managed a total of 25 shots, targeting the net on nine attempts.

Conrad recorded her third shutout of the season, raking in nine saves, while Bourne finished with eight.

The Black and Gold return to action on Friday, Oct. 23, when they travel to take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m.
