Bulldogs lose heartbreaker to Quinnipiac in OT

HAMDEN, CONN. – Senior Hannah Crofut (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season in the 49th minute to give the Bryant University women's soccer team a 1-0 lead, but they were not able to hold on late as Quinnipiac scored with five minutes left in regulation and then again in the first overtime to steal a 2-1 win away from the Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field.

Game Information

Quinnipiac 2, Bryant 1

Records: Quinnipiac 3-1, Bryant 2-1-1

Location: Hamden, Conn.

Coach Bigg's Comments

"I thought it was an excellent effort. I thought we created some good chances, especially at the start of the second half. I think that we controlled the ball quite well in the first half but maybe weren't quite as dangerous. In the second half, we traded some of that possession for dangerous opportunities. There were some key moments on our own end or defending our restarts that started to give them a few chances and that ended up being the difference in the game."

Key Moment

  • With five minutes remaining in the match, Bryant surrendered what seemed to be a harmless foul on the Quinnipiac side of midfield, but the Bobcats made it anything but. Jess Cascio played the ball long and a couple of quick touches later, Al Pelletier found the ball at her feet and she slotted it past freshman goalie Meghan Dalton (West Hartford, Conn.) to knot the match at one.

Scoring Summary

  • 48th minute – Bryant 1, Quinnipiac 0 -- Crofut scored her first of the season after senior Alyssa Riccione (Mohnton, Pa.) played a ball into the box that found sophomore Remi Manna (Pleasantville, N.Y.), who calmly chipped it over the goalie to the waiting senior Crofut who finished on a wide open net.
  • 85th minute – Bryant 1, Quinnipiac 1 – Cascio played a long ball to her teammate who shielded off a Bulldogs defender. The ball was skillfully touched through a pair of Bryant defenders to the waiting foot of Pelletier, who took a touch and kept it low past the outstretched Dalton.
  • 99th minute – Quinnipiac 2, Bryant 1 – On a counter attack, Madison Borowiec was able to play the ball through to Kelsey Goldring, who perfectly timed her run to get in behind. Goldring then tapped it past Dalton and finished on an open net.

Stats/Notes

  • Crofut's goal was her first since Sept. 6, 2015, when she scored the second of three in a 3-1 victory over Fairfield.
  • The Bulldogs were 4-0-1 in their previous five road games. Their last loss came in a 3-0 defeat against Central Connecticut in 2016.
  • Bryant snapped an eight-game unbeaten streak in overtime games, with their last defeat coming against Holy Cross on Sept. 22, 2015.
  • After playing all 98 minutes today, freshman Jamie Irwin (Succasunna, N.J.) has played the entire 388 minutes of the season so far.
