Sjoberg advances to round of 32 at ITAs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University women's tennis senior Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) became just the second player in Division I program history to win a first-round match at the ITA Northeast Regional on Thursday afternoon.

"Linnea won in three sets and her last set was great! She played really well in the third to win and I am very happy for her."

HOW IT HAPPENED (SINGLES)

  • Competing in the main draw, Sjoberg defeated Binghamton's Samara Eisenberg. She won the first set, 6-4, before faltering in the second, 3-6. Sjoberg clinched the win with an outstanding performance in third set, defeating Eisenberg, 6-3.
  • Sjoberg now advances to face the top overall seed, Syracuse's Gabriela Knutson.

HOW IT HAPPENED (DOUBLES)

  • Sjoberg and freshman Caterina Luisa Rokke (Oslo, Norway) were defeated by the URI tandem of Rachel Smilansky and Halah Davis, 8-3.

NOTES

  • Sjoberg joins Ryan Brown '17 as the only other female tennis player to win a match at the ITAs in Division I program history. Brown earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Ungurean-Halagian from St. Peter's.
