Volleyball's Win Streak Snapped by SHU

FAIRFIELD, CT- The Bryant women's volleyball team lost for the first time in over a month with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Sacred Heart Friday night. The loss snapped a nine game win streak for the Bulldogs.

Records: Bryant (19-10, 11-2 NEC), SHU (16-9, 10-3 NEC)

Coach Garlacy's Comments:

"Our middles played pretty flawless tonight and we had a big step up from Jenna Knight on the right side. It's a good time to refocus and play more consistent ball."

 

How it Happened: 

Set 1: Sacred Heart opened the first set on a 3-0 run and kept the lead through the entire set. Bryant was able to keep the score close until late in the set, but another Pioneers run allowed them to take the set win. Emma McGovern, Riley James, and Haley O'Brien had four kills each in the set.

Set 2: The Bulldogs were able to turn the tide to start Set 2, scoring the first three points and eventually opening up a 12-6 lead. Bryant held the lead for much of the set, but a late comeback by SHU allowed them to take the lead at 20-19 and go on to win. Mia Cergol had two kills, two aces, and eight assists for Bryant.

Set 3: Bryant trailed for the first half of the third set, but stayed close and came back to tie the score at 17. Sacred Heart took the lead back, but the Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 run to close the set. Jenna Knight and Alysa Wright combined on all three blocks for Bryant in the set.

Set 4: SHU opened up a big lead early in the fourth, scoring the first six points. Bryant was unable to do much to close the gap, but did show fight with a 5-1 run near the end of the set. Six different players record kills for Bryant in the final set.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Mia Cergol posted her team high 11th double-double of the season, finishing the match with 37 assists and 15 digs. She also pitched in six kills and three aces. 

  • Alysa Wright added to her NEC leading block total, leading all playerswith five. Jenna Knight and Haley O'Brien added three blocks apiece for Bryant.

  • Abby Rae set a new career high with 27 digs, which was also the most in the match.
