Bulldogs Fall to UMBC in America East Semifinals

BALTIMORE, Md.– The Bryant women's volleyball team fell to UMBC in the America East semifinals on Friday in Baltimore. The No. 4 seeded Bulldogs' season ended with a 3-0 loss to the defending champion and No. 1 seeded Retrievers.

"I am super proud of how hard our team battled tonight.  Every time we made a push UMBC ramped it up a notch. It was a good tournament atmosphere with lots of energy in the building. A great experience for our young team."

HOW IT HAPPENED (at UMBC)

  • Set 1- The Bulldogs and Retrievers started off close in the first set close before the Retrievers would go up 12-7. The Black and Gold would try to narrow the deficit with kills from Arianna Ugolini and Aubrey Lapour but UMBC would go on to win the set 25-14. Lapour had 3 kills for Bryant in the first and Arianna Ugolini recorded an ace. 

  • Set 2- The Bulldogs began the second on a 4-1 run thanks to a kill from Nadine Abdat and miscues from UMBC. The Retrievers would rally back however and tie the set at four even. UMBC would proceed to go on and score 6 consecutive points and extend a lead to 10-4. Bryant would make a comeback bid and shrink UMBC's lead to two with the help of a London Hunt kill. The remainder of the second set would play out like the first as the Retrievers would win 25-13 and go up 2-0.  Brookeyln Talmadge and Lea Mackey each recorded 3 blocks in the set and Carolina Camacho had 4 digs.

  • Set 3- The final set saw Bryant play extremely tough against the Retrievers as both teams exchanged leads for the majority of play. A late kill from UMBC's Michela De Marzi would give the Retrievers a lead they would not relinquish. The Bulldogs would in the final set by a score of 18-25 as UMBC would complete the 3-0 sweep and advance to the conference championship on Saturday against Binghamton. Aubrey Lapour and Arianna Ugolini each had 4 kills in the final set. Lea Mackey and Nadine Abdat also combined for another block.
