Men's tennis heads to St. Francis Brooklyn, NJIT this weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team will face Northeast Conference foe St. Francis Brooklyn and regional challenger NJIT this weekend in the Tri-State area.

Bryant and St. Francis Brooklyn will meet on Friday afternoon, while the Bulldogs and Highlanders will meet on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Gendron's Comments

"We are looking forward to our second conference match against a much-improved Brooklyn squad. NJIT is a very competitive team that creates a lot of interesting matchups. Last year was a battle and we are looking forward to the same type of matchup in the second half of the weekend."

Series History

  • Bryant is 3-0 all-time against St. Francis Brooklyn. The Bulldogs and Terriers have not met since the 2013-14 season. The top-seeded Bulldogs cruised past the eighth-seeded Terriers in the first round of the NEC Tournament.
  • Bryant and NJIT will be meeting for the second-straight season. The Black and Gold won the initial meeting last season, 4-3.  

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • The Bulldogs enter the weekend at 4-9 overall after splitting a pair of matches last weekend. They defeated Binghamton, 6-1, before falling to Dartmouth, 4-0.
  • Redshirt-junior Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) will bring a six-match winning streak into the weekend. He is 8-1 in the spring, including two matches that have gone unfinished.
  • Senior Jorge Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) had a strong weekend, winning one match and having one go unfinished. He now has six wins on the season.
  • Classmate Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is second on the team with 11 wins.
  • The Bulldogs played five matches against NJIT during the Farnsworth Invite. Bryant went 1-2 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.

Scouting the Terriers

  • The Terriers enter the weekend with a 1-7 overall record.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn played Boston University tough two weeks ago, falling 4-3.

Scouting the Highlanders

  • NJIT is a perfect 3-0 on the year, posting wins over Navy, Drexel, and Fairleigh Dickinson.
  • Tomi Antoljak has played at the No. 1 singles spot in all three matches, going 2-1.
  • Zac Castagna (No. 5), Abdullah Fouad (No. 4), Richard Rangga (No. 6) and Lukas Zvikas (No. 3) are all undefeated in dual matches.
