ROWING SUMS UP YEAR AFTER SPRING SEASON CANCELLATION

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- All club sports were cancelled for the remainder of the 2020 Spring semester due to COVID-19 after Bryant University’s Spring break in March. We asked members of our club sports to sum up some of the best, worst, and cherished times together. Read below to learn more about Women’s Rowing and how they summed up their year.

SHREWSBURY, M.A. -- The first ever Wormtown Chase Regatta took place on Saturday 10/26 in Shrewsbury, MA, on the Quinsigamond. Unlike the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, this race took place on the opposite side of the river which has a more open area with a park. This provides plenty of room for teams and viewers.

BOSTON, M.A. -- On Saturday, October 19th, the Women’s Rowing team shipped up to Boston to participate in the 55th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. It is the largest 2-day regatta in the world with over 11,000 athletes and over 61 events--bringing in about 225,000 people to the Boston area. The last time the Bryant Rowing team participated in The Head of the Charles was in 2017. Each rowing member typically gets the chance to participate at least once in their four years of being on the team. Not only was there a lot to watch on the water, but there were plenty of vendors such as Clif [bars], Brooks Brothers, Aston Martin, Concept2, and more.

WORCESTER, M.A. -- On Saturday, October 12th, the team had their second race of the season in Worcester, MA on the Quinsigamond River. The temperature was a bit on the colder side compared to the first race, and there was a very strong headwind from the very start. This yielded slower times and conditions that the girls were not used to rowing in.

LOWELL, M.A. -- The Women’s Rowing team headed up to Lowell, MA this past Sunday to compete in their first race of the Fall season. There have been a lot of big changes from the Spring season to now. The team has a new head and assistant coach, they’re competing in a new race at the end of the season, and since they lost six competitive seniors, the team is much smaller. They entered two v4+ boats with all varsity rowers. In the women’s open 4+ race, there were 15 total collegiate teams.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- On Sunday, April 28th, the Bryant Women’s Rowing team has been lucky enough to host their third race of the season yet again at their home venue. They faced Endicott College and Mass Maritime Academy racing a 1v4+, 2v4+ and a 3v4+. After the race concluded, the 1v4+ and 2v8+ completed a time trial to gauge where they would place for their biggest race of the season the following weekend.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Bryant hosted Endicott at their home venue on Sunday, April 14th. They raced a 1v4+, 2v4+, 3v4+, and an 2v8+ mixing the line ups from the 1 and 2v4+. The Bulldogs were ahead by many boat lengths of Endicott for all their races.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Women’s Rowing team faced Merrimack on Saturday, April 6th at their home venue. Many friends and family came out to support and cheer them into their first Spring season race win. In the New England Rowing Championships, Merrimack was one place ahead of Bryant, but this race, Bryant was able to win all three of the races with their 1v4+, 2v4+ and 3v4+.

WALTHAM, M.A. -- The Women’s Rowing team headed to Waltham this past weekend to compete against Brandeis University’s team. It was a rainy day, but this time there was luckily minimal wind compared to what the team has been faced with in most of their fall races. Many supporters came out as this was a local race.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- On Friday, October 26th the girls headed to upstate New York to compete in The Head of the Fish Regatta the following day. This race is always held on the last weekend of October and has been ever since 1986, and winners are awarded decorated mounted fish heads. Unfortunately, there were high winds, low temperatures, and rain that prevented many teams and singles to race--including Bryant’s varsity boats. However, the novice boat had the chance to race and did considerably well.

WORCESTER, M.A. -- The Women’s Rowing team headed to Worcester, M.A. on Saturday, October 13th for their second race of the fall season. It was very cold due to the low temperature mixed with rain. This didn’t stop the girls from pushing through and placing impeccably better than last year!

LOWELL, M.A. -- On Sunday September 30th, the Women’s Rowing team headed to Lowell, M.A. for their first race of the fall season. It was a cool temperature to start, but once the sun came out things started to warm up and become more comfortable for rowers and parents who came out to support. This was not only the first race of the season, but the novice’s very first race of their rowing careers.
